The town was originally named Petersburg, after settler Peter Fleck, who built the first cabin and operated the first store. The town got its current name from York Sulphur Springs, the first summer resort in Adams County. George Washington and his wife Martha stayed at the Springs in 1799. York Springs was incorporated in 1868, and organized in 1869. York Springs is known for its apple orchards. York Springs is served by the Bermudian Springs School District.
